Naughtiness in a Fur Coat!

Have you ever had one of those days when everyone seems to be 'in on the joke' except you?!

Today I went to the supermarket and I really have to concentrate when I'm food shopping. Fashion shopping on the other hand, I find a breeze! I always have the right undies on for trying on what I want, and can 'speed scan' a busy shop in 20 seconds if necessary, but food shopping requires more concentration.

I never know what foods to put with what, I worry that I will forget something and have to go back and it is just overall quite stressful, so when I was loading up my goods on the conveyor (tins and boxes first, eggs, crisps and bread at the end so that my 'light bags' are on top in the trolley!) I was busy concentrating on whether I'd put all the boxes together (so they are easier to pack at the other end when all the stuff is flying through the checkout - I don't like a back-log!) that when the checkout operator spoke to me I was a bit taken aback!

"Have you got naughtiness in a fur coat?" She asked.
"What!" I exclaimed - very surprised. What exactly was she saying?! I thought she was quite 'bolshy and forward'! I mean, was she asking if I'm 'all fur coat and no knickers'?! This is what I was thinking! 'How dare she?!'

I was about to reply, in a suitably 'affronted' tone, when she smiled and said "Have you got naughtiness in a fur coat?", nodding toward the cat food that she'd just scanned!

"Oh!" I smiled, "I see what you mean! Yes, we have 2 naughty fur coats around the house"

When I'm in the supermarket concentrating on the food, I'm in another world!

Those Hazy Summer Days

Remember the movie Grease and the main song - Summer Nights? The story is about a young couple in the last year of High School who fall in love at the beach one summer, and then meet again when they return to the same school?

The song is about "Ooh! Those summer nights!" the long days they spent having fun and just enjoying the moment and being young! Do you remember being at school and loving the upcoming summer holidays with all those lovely unstructured days to see your friends, lay in bed, do a bit of shopping, maybe fall in love?! I used to love the summer break when I was a teenager - not thinking about school or rules, or having to be responsible for anything other than my own social calendar!!

And then as a parent, the school summer holidays have once again come onto my radar. Whilst I was a young 20 something career girl, I kind of forgot about the long summer holidays. I just fell into the 'office workers life' of having maybe a 2 week break somewhere in the scheme of things and odd days here and there to have my down time, but as my now 7YO daughter started to go to main school (not nursery) the subject of summer holidays came up again and I was surprised at how much they were dreaded by the other parents at the school gate.

After having my first long summer holiday with no private day nursery or other childcare to help me entertain her, I could start to see why these mums dreaded the holidays- it was a long period of unstructured time to keep everyone happy whilst carrying on with the other commitments of work and running a home. This is tough. It can seem like a summer holiday to everyone else but the mum!

However as my daughter has grown and I have matured in my outlook, I realise that the kids won't stay small forever. These years are to be cherished, not dreaded, and to be honest, I'd also like to have the warm, fuzzy feelings of looking forward to a long, hot summer again - just like I did when I was 16. But now as an adult and a keen observer of time management and productivity, I can see that many adults have now become set in their mindsets and their ways. Rather than consciously remembering to savour every moment, they are still trying to 'get everything done' whilst I have learned that dropping the balls is not only OK but necessary if you are to just stop and enjoy your life, not just rush through it.

I am looking forward to summer vacation 2010! This one will be the last before my youngest is at nursery, and he is growing up so fast. I don't know what we will do yet but whatever it is will be enjoyed to its fullest. I may even spend some long lazy time sunbathing in the garden whilst the kids bounce on the trampoline!

What are your plans this summer?

Review: Canvas Wall Art

Look at my latest piece of artwork!

I know diddley squat about brush strokes, famous artists or galleries but if there was one canvas that I'd like to look at again and again - it would be this one of my kids!

I know the picture looks a little cluttered and 'un-posed' but this was taken without my children's knowledge one morning when we were about to get ready to leave for school! I walked round the corner - saw this and quickly retreated for my camera to get the shot!

I think it is so easy these days to rush through life without ever stopping to breathe sometimes, but our children will only be *this age* once! Even over the course of the last two months I can see a massive difference in my two - they have both had a growth spurt and now I have to buy more school uniform for them before September because everything is looking short, so if there is ever a great way to capture these memories of them how they were, getting a canvas print is it!

The quality of this picture from Canvas Dezigns is fab and I was really impressed with the speed of their production and delivery - I placed the order on the Thursday and was signing for the delivery on the following Monday!

If you are like me I bet you have loads of photos stored on your computer, so if you want to freshen up your home decor with a great piece of priceless artwork, check out Canvas Dezigns and readers of this blog also get a 5% discount on their already reasonable prices! Here is Canvas Prints online! Use code OZJJQYFVBGS to get the discount! *This code has now expired*

Happy shopping! Oh! and before you judge the tatty decor of my hallway, I can assure you that it is all nicely painted and wallpapered now!! (this is me being Hyacinth Bouquet for just a second!)

Juan Sheet - Sex Symbol or Sleaze?!

Have you seen the new advert for Plenty - the kitchen towel. If you haven't, here it is:

At first I hated it, but as I've seen it more and more, the character 'Juan Sheet' has grown on me!! The comments on the You Tube page for this video are really funny too!

So is Juan Sheet a sex symbol or a sleaze? Your thoughts please...

Review: The Family Charger

**This is a Review Post**

Product Name: Premier Family Charging Station from Mobile Fun
Buy Online Here: http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/the-premier-family-charging-station-p14450.htm
Price: £9.99
Star Rating: 3 out of 5

The blurb: Are you forever trying to untangle all of your charger wires or do you keep having to wait for someone else to finish with the wall socket before you can charge your phone? The Premier family charging station takes away all the frustration of trying to charge your phone by giving you 3 extra charging sockets to charge your phones and MP3 players simultaneously.
Initial Thoughts: I was really excited to review this product as I'm a sucker for anything that keeps things nice and neat, plus I like gadgets! When it arrived, I thought it was quite nifty, and a neat, simple design. However I thought that the box it arrived in had a dated photo on the front, as it showed an old fashioned Nokia in the charger. But their website shows the charger with an iPhone in it so that is much more modern! It also just shows how quickly our technology changes that phones that would have looked fine just 3 or 4 years ago now looks clunky and outdated.
I Liked: You store excess cables in the base of the device - LOVE IT!! I really do appreciate good design on a product and something that allows the clutter of tangled cables to be hidden in the frame is a winner with me. I also liked how the phones being charged are positioned upright and facing out so you can see read your time on the screen without having to pick the phone up. Also, you can charge your games console and iPod using the device so it is not limited to one thing.
I wasn't Keen: The 3 adjustable holders are supposed to fit every make and model of phone available but I wanted a BlackBerry 8900 charger and it was a really tight squeeze to get it in. Plus when I did, the arms of the holder pressed against the side buttons on the phone, so it activated my camera function when it was in the charger which I didn't like.
Overall: In our house, we tend to have our phone chargers next to our bedside tables so we put them on charge at night and can set our alarms etc, so we don't really need the Family Charger due to our phone habits. However if you find that your family argues over available wall sockets or is always losing their chargers, this product 'anchors' your homes charging location so everyone gets charged neatly and nothing gets lost! Plus you can use the one switch on the wall to turn off the power for all 3 phones to save electricity which is a bonus. I think this product would be ideal for families with 3 or more children who all have phones.

Hello Nails!

I chose this post title as "Hello Nails" is the name of an episode of Kath & Kim which is one of my fave shows!!

Look at my nails - just had them done!

...and if you are thinking that this has nothing to do with time management - you'd be right. But it's my blog and I'll post what I want *tosses hair back* OK?!

It was Cybermummy... and we had fluff on our muff!

Now before you think I'm being pervy - the conversation started innocently enough!

It was lunchtime and I was about to host the table topic of "The Blog Life Balance", a very *serious* (ahem!) and interesting worthy topic don't you agree?! But whilst we were still in the general 'chatter' phase of the lunch, conversation turned to our enormous goody bags and what each stall was giving away.

In the ASDA bag, we were given some cotton wool, breast pads, baby lotion, baby wash, stretch mark cream and various other bits. This becomes relevant later - ASDA supplied the 'fluff'!

Now I don't want to 'out' anybody so I won't say who exactly was at my table, they can comment and reveal themselves if they wish, but we had a pregnant lady there and at one stage the chatter turned to bladder weakness and several of us confessed the benefits of the old Tena lady! (Or maybe this was just me - I can't remember!) But preggers seemed to be having trouble with that issue as we sat there so we suggested she use a breast pad to soak it up! Then someone else said the cotton wool might be better, but I pitched in that that this could result in 'fluff on her fluff'.

One of the bloggers at the opposite side of the table misheard and everyone cracked up when we heard her say "Fluff on her muff!" ...and so the name was born!

Now 'fanny' related jokes may seem childish, but by God they gave us a laugh that day. If you check it out on Twitter - the phrase even has its own hashtag! Admittedly, it has only been used by the few people at the table - it isn't like - trending or anything! But it amused us!

At the days end when we all gathered for the pub quiz, the Mums the Boss girls (who a party isn't complete without!) decided that our team would be called "Fluff on the Muff"!! So the phrase stuck!

Thankfully none of us actually used the cotton wool on the day (that I know of anyway!) but next year - just in case, perhaps Tena Lady would like to give us some samples?!!

Cybermummy 2010.... The Aftermath!

OK so it's not quite an 'aftermath' but this is what TV shows on More 4 tend to call spin off shows so I 'borrowed' the term!

It really was a great day - my head is still spinning with all the follow ups I am going to do (and have done!) and all the ideas that sparked within my head and are now on paper - waiting to be put into practice. (Just as soon as I have met my book deadline and delivered the manuscript to my Publisher!)

I reckon I'll get a few posts out of the Cybermummy experience, so for now - to give you a taster, here are some of the Tweets involving me that were broadcast from and after the event!

NotesfromHome loved my table at lunch with @businessmum at #cybermummy but am mortified to have brought into circulation the phrase #fluffonyourmuff

If the #fluffonyourmuff phrase doesn't get you to come back soon to read this blog, I don't know what will!!

Shameless Self Promotion!

I realised this week that I've been writing this blog for two whole years whilst also running a business, writing books, doing speaking engagements and being a hands on mum of two young children - and do you know how may times I have plugged my business to the readers of this blog?

Nil, None, Nada!

So I decided it was time for a bit of shameless self promotion and my message is for all the business owners out there who are running things from home.... I can help!

My telephone answering service caters for small businesses in all industries, by putting a full time Receptionist onto the end of their business phone line, so that they don't lose business through missed calls.

My clients are the kitchen table tycoons, the mumpreneurs, the consultants, the trainers, the infopreneurs, the people running businesses from the spare room or converted garage, the mobile businessperson, the young high growth businesses that intend to grow and want the proper support in place, basically if you cannot always answer your phone, you could be losing business and I stop this from happening.

But it's not just the potential missed business that my service can assist with. It can also make your small business appear larger. If you are competing on a commercial playing field, my service can stop your business looking 'home made'. Having a Receptionist take your calls gives a great first impression.

What if it doesn't matter to you if your clients think your company is larger than it is? Okay, so what is important to you? Is it work life balance? Flexibility? Being able to do the school run and still run a serious business?

Tick, tick and tick!! My Virtual Receptionist does all of this. It is how I've been able to run a business whilst still being a Stay at Home Mum / Work at Home Mum. It has helped me to manage my juggling act and is why I'm so passionate about helping other business people to manage their daily juggling act too!

My business is called The Dream PA so if your fancy has been tickled (so to speak!) you can check me out there.

But if you want to use this service and get your first month free, go to: Don't Lose Business.

Thank you for allowing me my soapbox for this blog post! I feel much better now!
